Some people like to see the Bible as history. Others like to see the bible as a rule book for the way we live our lives with which they can beat people over the head until they conform to society’s rules, whatever those rules are. I like to see the bible as a collection of stories that teach lessons about the nature of God and the universe. And I don’t think it matters much if all the stories are true, or if they happened in the way they are described. The stories still have something to teach.
But those stories can sure be hard to understand sometimes. You read those words and you...

I have decided there are roughly six types of bosses. I have spent at least 32 years studying this matter and after a great deal of thought I think that all bosses fall into these categories:
The Jaguar (Incompetent/Unintelligent)This is your basic Psycho Boss. This is the boss who is incompetent and too stupid to realize it. This boss believes in having total power. They want to control every little thing that happens in the workplace. If you try to explain why one of their half-baked ideas won’t work their eyes sort of glaze over. They are frequently into nit-picking and will totally not...

How many times I’ve sat in prayer,
Hoping there was someone there,
To listen to the musings of my heart
So many times I thought I knew,
What I wanted God to do,
And so I put the horse before the cart
For as I put my order in,
And waited for God to begin,
To send my heart’s desire postage paid
I never stopped to give a thought
To all the good things I have got
Or give a nod to plans God might have made
For when I make my prayer request
I assume that I know best
What will bring me happiness on earth
For what I fail to realize,
A man, no matter how he tries,
Can never estimate the real...

Let me give my love to those in need
Let me comfort those who bleed
Let me give my ear and heart
To those whose lives are torn apart
Let me be thankful for this day
For good friends come and gone their way
Let me see each day as new
With those the years have seen me through
Let me always realize
The hope in every child’s eyes
Let me walk upon the land
With gentle foot and loving hand
Let me value every friend
Who walks with me to journey’s end
And let me thank you for my death
That day I take that final breath
And let it float on summer’s breeze
Please

I can see them
Shadows on the horizon
Circle the wagons
Wait and hide, hide and wait
Behind the wheel
It’s my own fault
Stepping on this piece of earth
I mistook this valley
Seeing in the shadows
Something moving
I cannot see
To aim through all this smoke
There is no time to aim
Fighting for lands I have
No right to claim

My late friend, Paul, was a Wizard of Oz fanatic. More than that, he was a Judy Garland fanatic. And imagine, he always insisted that he wasn’t gay. Go figure. I miss you, Paul. Anyway, Paul was enamored with Judy Garland and the Wizard of Oz so naturally, one of his favorite songs was “Over the Rainbow”. However much he loved that song, though, he could not accept any version other than the movie version. One sure way to get him going—and I did this as often as I could—was to play an alternate performance of this song. Judy’s was the only acceptable rendition.
People are funny that...

Kung Fu

I wanted to tell you what I’ve been doing in my back to kung fu classes, but it occurs to me that without a little explanation, you won’t really understand it. So I’ve decided to give all of Reverbia some basic kung fu lessons in print.
Lesson 1—Basic Horse Stance
You can’t fight if you can’t stand. That makes sense, doesn’t it? Of course it does. So the first thing you learn to do is to make your legs strong. To do that, you stand in what is called horse riding stance. It makes your legs very, very strong. It’s not easy to do, but it is easy to practice. You can do it while washing...

I sometimes get the feeling that what people really want is some kind of movie star in office. I think that’s why Arnold was elected governor here. Sarah is a movie star. She is, at least in the way she behaves. And that’s why I’m afraid people might actually vote for her. It scares me.

Day to Day, Kung Fu

It has now been about three weeks since I called my kung fu pal, Lee, and started actively practicing Hung Gar Kung Fu again. So here is a little update on my progress. The kung fu road is not an easy road, especially in a hard core school. Not all kung fu schools are equal, but I guess that’s evident. Not all martial arts schools are equal. There are two basic kinds of martial arts schools.
One kind of martial arts school is “the business”. This school is supposed to make money. This is an elusive martial arts dream. Hardly any martial arts schools make money. We all knew martial arts schools...
