I have a lucky elephant
I want you all to know
His name is Jim and I’m with him
Wherever he may go
He does not like the subway
And he won’t fit in my car
And Jim’s afraid of airplanes
So we never travel far
And when the police see us
They say, “Take him to the zoo!”
But Jim prefers to feed the ducks
For something fun to do
I met Jim on a Sunday
And ever since that day
He sticks with me like a shadow
And he never goes away
I ask him many questions
Whenever I get stuck
He always has an answer
And he’s always brought me luck
Whenever I get in a fix
Jim has a tale to tell
How God sent down the angels
To guard our souls from Hell
How God made rain for forty days
To purify the land
For Jim, and all the elephants
Who live by His command
Some ask me why Jim lives with me
They ask me where he sleeps
He’s better than that rabbit’s foot
I know my brother keeps
And he’s better than a lucky coin
For coins can soon be lost
But it’s hard to lose an elephant
The ones I’ve come acrossed
Some say I’m superstitious
And maybe they are right
But to have this lucky elephant
Gives me such great delight
For Jim would never hurt a soul
Nor cause a child to cry
And he’s told me all the secrets
Of what happens when we die
So when I take my final breath
Please do not think it odd
That when I die Old Jim will fly
My soul up to God
